Modern
Language Association commonly known as MLA style is widely used in writing on
language and literature. This style was created to help scholars, students and
researchers in the literature and language domain, use a uniform way to format
their papers. Since using MLA makes papers uniform, consistent and easy to
read, other subject areas have also adopted it.
The
MLA 8th edition is the current version of their handbook dated April
2016. The handbook contains in-depth instructions as well as guidelines and
standards that should be followed by scholars using the MLA format. Our business

bring you this thoughtful and informative guide related to MLA paper
formatting:
Formatting Overview
1. Paper choice
You
should only use white paper when you decide to print your MLA format paper.
Avoid the use of other shades or colors such as ivory or off-white. The
recommended paper size is 81/2 by 11 inch.
2. Heading instructions in
MLA
When
it comes to creating your project’s MLA header, there are two options:
·
The heading can be
placed at the top of the first page
·
The title page can be
at the front of your assignment
Here
is an example of an MLA header for your essay, assignment or paper:
Neo
F. Williams
Professor
Lansbury
Literature
101
2nd
March 2018
The rise and fall of Adolf
Hitler
3. Page Numbers and
Running Head
A
running head usually consists of the last name of the writer, space and then
the number of the page. This is placed in the upper right-hand corner.
Example: Williamson 8
The
running head and page number are usually inserted on the second page. However,
your professor may ask you to include them on the first page of your
assignment. You should ensure that you follow all the instructions of your
professor to the last detail.
4. Margins
One-inch
margins should be used all around the entire page. Although most word
processing programs have one-inch margins set at default, you should check your
page settings first before proceeding.
5. Paragraphs
All
your sentences should start one-half inch from the left margin. Ensure that you
indent the first word in each paragraph.
6. Quotations
The
majority of your paper should not be made up of quotes. When using quotes from
an individual, it is essential to credit his/her work.
Example:
·
With the person’s name
in the sentence: Garry Neville shares a glimpse into the overall match by
stating “Liverpool looks like a real deal this season. With the amount of money
they have spent, everyone expects them to win the league” (6).
